More about this ongoing art/music project HERE : )
Continuing with the plan to get more work out there in places other than galleries, here’s some New Site Specific work made for a local coffee shop – smaller oil paintings made on raised stretchers, the walls in the shop are a really beautiful warm grey colour, hopefully they will be accepted, if so I’ll give them a shout out here :)
My other P O N O R site will be ready shortly. It will have a new SHOP section where if you happen to spot anything you like you’ll easily be able to buy my work – paintings/drawings/objects directly on-line, via Paypal and so on. (I’m also planning for a space where you’ll be able put in bids – as in: “make me an offer” – a bit similar to what already happens on sites like Ebay.)
There’s no reason why selling on-line shouldn’t work for artists, the gallery system doesn’t work well for anyone I ever met and that’s a whole lot of artists and makers over the years. The high end prices charged at most larger established galleries only really help the already famous and successful, or let’s just say, they are in place specifically to create exclusivity, thereby continuing the art market stranglehold which cynically uses art and artists as investment commodity. It should be possible to aim to keep prices at a sensible level so that anyone who really wants a unique piece of work should be able to buy it, enjoy it and feel welcome to be a part of the arts community – this in turn would really benefit artists and makers. This change wouldn’t hurt the galleries, they already have their customer base, but there’s a desperate need for those who make things to get directly connected to prospective customers and the net now offers us this as a real opportunity and option.
A few years back people weren’t used to buying on-line but now most of us are used to it – of course there are a few problematic areas, colour reproduction for example, but I’ve never had anyone want to return an item specifically because it looked slightly different in colour due to monitor/screen settings.
I genuinely think things really need to change and they won’t change unless artists and their supporters stop endorsing outdated methodology.
*Thanks for taking the time to read through this, I don’t often sound off here : )
